xAI releases Grok-2, adds image generation on X
Elon Musk's company, xAI, has just launched Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini in beta, introducing some exciting new features. These AI models are part of a broader push by Musk to advance AI technology, and they're already making waves on X, the social network formerly known as Twitter.
Grok-2, the main model, and its smaller counterpart, Grok-2 mini, have both been enhanced with better reasoning and coding abilities. But what really has people talking is their new image-generation capability. Users who subscribe to X's Premium or Premium+ services are now able to try out these new features, which are currently in the beta stage.
In a blog post, xAI expressed their excitement about the launch, describing Grok-2 as a major leap forward from the earlier Grok-1.5 model. The post also mentioned that an early version of Grok-2 had already been tested on the LMSYS leaderboard under the name “sus-column-r.”
Looking ahead, xAI plans to make both Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini available to developers through an enterprise API later this month, potentially opening up even more possibilities for how these AI models can be used.
However, the rollout hasn't been without controversy. Early users of the image generation feature have noticed that there aren't many restrictions on creating images of political figures, which could become a concern as the U.S. presidential election approaches. It's likely that xAI will need to address this issue in the near future to avoid potential misuse of the technology.
